Maritime figures convene to discuss cyber security risks

safetyforseaCyber Security is a concern which is only increasing and a topic at the forefront of many businesses’ minds.  There is a number of prominent figures from the maritime industry  that take part in the inaugural Cyber Security Seminar at Singapore Maritime Week 2016 an event co-organised by the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) and The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). Cyber Security is a concern which is only increasing and as a topic at the forefront of many businesses’ minds, it was a welcome addition to this year’s programme.

It seems that every maritime event this year is having a dedicated section on Cyber security. This is a positive step, as for many maritime executives at board level, IT and Cyber security is not even on the agenda. The industry needs to raise its awareness through all levels of the business and assess their current risks and start resolving those before they get attacked.

The cost of reducing the risks now will be far less than once an attacker is in stealing confidential data, disrupting operations and looking for ways to extort the company for financial benefit.
